What you should do
Go to the South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) office nearest to where you live and bring the following:
Complete the application form in the presence of the SASSA officer (note that only you as the applicant or a SASSA official may complete the application form).
You will be given a receipt.

Who can apply for state pension in South Africa?
If you are a woman or man 60 years or older you can get a monthly old age grant payment from the government. You must be a citizen or permanent resident of South Africa. You must be living in South Africa at the time of applying for the grant.
Can I apply for SA pension online?
Applications can be lodged on https://services.sassa.gov.za which is a secure website. After reviewing the system other grants will also be added to the portal.
This should be a relief to grant applicants as it will save them the inconvenience of standing in queues at SASSA offices in order to apply for their grants.
When can I apply for aged pension?
You can claim to get Age Pension in the 13 weeks before you reach Age Pension age. To get paid as soon as you’re old enough, submit your claim in the 13 weeks before you’re Age Pension age.
If you already get an eligible payment, we’ll write to you 13 weeks before you reach Age Pension age.
How long does a pension last?
Pension payments are made for the rest of your life, no matter how long you live, and can possibly continue after death with your spouse.
