What is Kimberley?

Kimberley is the capital city of South Africa’s Northern Cape Province. It’s known for its 19th-century diamond mines, like the deep, hand-dug Big Hole. Nearby, the Kimberley Mine Museum is a re-creation of the town in its heyday and displays jewelry and uncut diamonds. The William Humphreys Art Gallery exhibits South African work, Old Master drawings, 17th-century European paintings, and modern art.

Kimberley is the capital city in the Northern Cape Province of South Africa.  Kimberley, known as the “Diamond City”, is in the center of South Africa with two national roads leading to it. The N12 (Cape Town via the N1 to the south and Pretoria/Johannesburg to the north) and the N8 going east to west.

Kimberley was founded in 1871 when diamonds were discovered on a nearby farm named Vooruitzicht (owned by the De Beers brothers). The town was also known as New Rush before it was renamed to Kimberley (after then British Secretary of State for the Colonies Lord Kimberley).

Kimberley was incorporated into the Cape Colony in 1880.  The De Beers Consolidated Mines, organized by Cecil Rhodes, assumed control of the diamond fields in 1888, and its headquarters are still in Kimberley.
