Which type of mulch is best?
Organic mulches, like wood chips, leaves, and other plant materials, are best at keeping the soil moist and moderating its temperature in hot and cold weather.
They also add some nutrients and improve soil structure and drainage as they break down. Organic mulches suppress but don’t block weeds.
What type of mulch to avoid?
Several products should never be used as mulch: sawdust, wood shavings and un-aged wood chips.
As these materials begin to break down, they consume large amounts of nitrogen, depriving surrounding plants of this vital nutrient.
How long does mulch last?
The practical lifetime of mulch can be anywhere from 4-7 years. This is how long it takes for a layer of mulch to completely break down,
although it depends on several different environmental factors (e.g. in direct sunlight, covering the very wet ground, etc).
How do you choose a mulch?
As a general rule, organic mulches typically break down more quickly than inorganic ones.
