What is Vermiculite?
Vermiculite is a hydrous phyllosilicate mineral that undergoes significant expansion when heated.
Exfoliation occurs when the mineral is heated sufficiently, and commercial furnaces can routinely produce this effect. Vermiculite forms by the weathering or hydrothermal alteration of biotite or phlogopite.

And because vermiculite takes longer to set, you can be more meticulous. Any imperfections can be addressed later. It can take one to two days for it to cure.
Does vermiculite lighten soil?

It is commonly used for seed germination and in seed germination mixes. Improves drainage and lightens the soil in the garden, in raised beds, or in pots.
