In an internal combustion engine, a turbocharger is a forced induction device that is powered by the flow of exhaust gases.

How is a turbocharger used?
It is the job of the turbocharger to compress more air flowing into the engine’s cylinder. When air is compressed the oxygen molecules are packed closer together. This increase in air means that more fuel can be added for the same size naturally aspirated engine.
How does a turbocharger work step by step?
As the air passes through the housing, the exhaust pulse rotates the turbine, which in turn spins the compressor wheel.
The compressor wheel performs two functions — first, the vanes of the wheel pull in the intake air, and then the vanes use centrifugal force to push the air into the compressor housing.
How fast does a turbocharger turn?
The new generation of turbocharger rotors can spin up to 220,000 rpm. For comparison, the Boeing 747 aircraft engine rotor spins about 7000 rpm. The air entering the turbocharger rotor can travel at a speed close to the sound speed (340.3 m/s).
How long will a turbocharger last?
