Where To Obtain Train Driving Qualification

The Transnet Freight Rail’s School of Rail Campuses are situated nation-wide, namely at Esselenpark in Kempton Park, Koedoespoort, Kimberley, Bloemfontein, Wentworth, Bellville and in other centres around South Africa.

All these centres offer Leadership Programmes in partnership with service providers and universities, Railway Operations Training, Railway Signalling, Permanent Way Construction and Maintenance, Permanent Way Welding, Railway Maintenance and Railway Engineering & Safety Training, as well as many other rail-related training interventions.

School of Rail – Types of Training

Operations Training

Operations Training specialises in the training of Train Drivers and Train Control Officers, as well as those concerned with Yard Operations and Customer Services. Any company with personnel that are involved in train movement and shunting of rail vehicles will benefit from this kind of training.

Courses are based on theoretical and some practical training in compliance with unit standards registered with SAQA. Some learning materials from Railway Operations are fully accredited – learners may be able to attain National Qualifications after undertaking a course of training disciplines in the Functional Yard Operations, Train Control Officer’s fields, etc.

Rail Maintenance Permanent Way

Specialises in the training and development of people who build and maintain the railway line. This includes protection duties and different welding courses. This depot is the only of its kind in South Africa and any company utilising them for training will have highly skilled employees within this kind of working environment.

Signalling

Is unique in the sense that it is the only depot in South African that provides training in railway signalling. The training is highly sought after and is linked to further education and training institutions for the career path of individuals. It provides training in all kinds of railway signalling equipment and telecontrol.

Integrated Technology

(Including Telecommunications) – present numerous training courses in the Telecommunication field including radio, transmission, hi site and cable training and the computer software field.

Overhead Traction & Substations

In order to comply with the Occupational Health and Safety Act, 1993 (Act No. 85 of 1993), it will be compulsory for all employees who are employed on Electrified Sections (11 KV, 3 KV DC, 25/50 KV AC) whose duties require them to work in the vicinity of, or near, exposed “Live” High-Voltage Electrical Equipment, to receive the necessary training.

This also includes disciplines for example, for Transnet Rail Engineering, Transnet Pipelines, Transnet Port Terminals, etc.

Railway Engineering & Safety

This very important department specialises in Railway Track Maintenance and Safety.

Leadership

Focus specifically on leadership development within the Rail industry.

The Esselenpark campus provides students with excellent accommodation facilities. Learners can be accommodated in three hotels, offering lodging in economy rooms, standard rooms with bathroom en suite, luxury rooms with bathroom en suite, twin rooms with bathroom en suite, and even two presidential suites.

The campus grounds offer a wide variety of recreational facilities for after-class relaxation sessions, such as a bowling green, cricket fields, netball courts, rugby fields, soccer fields, tennis courts and volleyball courts.

Lecture rooms on the premises are equipped with essentials such as overhead projectors, screens, flipcharts, whiteboards, podiums, microphones, TV’s, etc.

The Main Hall is an excellent venue for large seminars, seating up to 1500 delegates. Gala dinners for up to 500 guests can be arranged in the Main Hall.
