What is VHS vs VCR?
VHS is a videotape cassette format, and VCR is actually the name for a type of player. But in reality, with the demise of Sony’s Betamax format for home videocassettes, virtually all VCRs exclusively play VHS tapes, and virtually all videocassettes are in the VHS format.
How does a VHS work?
As with almost all cassette-based videotape systems, VHS machines pull the tape out from the cassette shell and wrap it around the inclined head drum which rotates at 1,800 rpm in NTSC machines and at 1,500 rpm for PAL, one complete rotation of the head corresponding to one video frame.
How much did VHS tapes cost?
Adjusted for inflation, the cost was close to that of a modern Blu-Ray release. In the 1986 Sears catalog, name brand blank VHS tapes cost R148.12.
If you bought them in quantity, they cost R115.17 each. That is R378.95for a single, and $18 in quantity when you adjust for inflation in 2022 dollars
