Are drums an instrument?
As the “keeper of the rhythm,” the drum provides the foundation for the overall sound of music. Because a drum only has to be hit to make a sound, it is also one of the simplest of instruments.
Why do drums sound good?
Basically when you hit a drum is creates a ‘cluster’ of frequencies that have such a complex arrangement that the human brain cannot decipher it as anything other than a percussion hit. White noise is an even more complex arrangement, a sinewave is the most simple arrangement.
Why is a drum tuned?
Drums require tuning for a variety of reasons:
to sound good together as a kit, to sound pleasing as an individual drum, to achieve the desired amount of ringing and resonance, and to produce the sound that fits the music. Some drums such as timpani and rototoms are tuned to a definite pitch.
