How many watts do I need in a strobe?
If your work is more location-oriented and 500 to 1,200-watt seconds of strobe output is enough light for what you typically shoot, then battery power is the way to go without a doubt.
If your work is a mix of both location and studio, two or three battery-operated, 500-watt-second strobes are a great option.
How many watts does a strobe light use?
Strobes produce 300 to 1,250 watt seconds of power. Even the smallest strobe head is significantly more powerful than your most powerful Speedlight. In most cases, a strobe has at least five times more power.
How long can you use a strobe light?
Guidance also recommends that continuous operation should not exceed 7 seconds. Strobes should be mounted at a high level and wherever appropriate the beams should be deflected off matt surfaces to reduce the glare. They should not be sited on escape routes, corridors or stairs or other changes of level.
