History
Shortly after the formal establishment of the Catholic hierarchy in South Africa in 1951, it was first proposed to find a Catholic university in the country.
The idea was taken a step further in 1993 when a discussion group – initiated by Professor Emmanuel Ngara, then the Deputy Vice-Chancellor at Fort Hare University, including Catholic academics, clergy, and business persons – began seriously to consider the matter.
In June 1997, a Board of Trustees was constituted to guide the process, and, in November 1997, a Section 21 Company (not for profit) was registered.
