What is Rica?
RICA stands for the Regulation of Interception of Communications and Provision of Communication Related Information Act 70 of 2002 and finally came into effect on 30 September 2005. RICA is the piece of South African legislation that governs the interception or monitoring of paper-based and electronic communications.

What do you need to Rica a SIM card in South Africa?
You need one of two documents:
- Green barcoded ID or ID card.
- Passport (make sure it hasn’t expired)
How do I activate Rica?
After downloading the MTN App from your app store:
- Tap Continue to close the welcome screen.
- Choose RICA my SIM to activate it. The documents needed during the Self-RICA process will be listed. You won’t be able to Self-RICA without all the required information.
- Tap Get started to begin the Self-RICA process.
What is required to Rica a SIM card?
You will need to have your original barcoded Identity Document, as well as a valid proof of residence. You will also be required to have a copy of your ID and proof of residence available when your SIM is delivered, and you (the account holder) must sign for it in person.
