How does the pulley work?
Pulleys are made by looping a rope over one or more wheels. They are often used to lift heavy objects: pulling down on one end of the rope creates an upward pull at the other end. Looping the rope over more wheels increases the upward force.

They also increase mechanical advantage when we use multiple pulleys together. This process decreases the amount of force required to lift something up.

Using a system of pulleys can be much more complex and provide a powerful mechanical advantage — greatly reducing the amount of force required to move an object.
If one movable pulley is used (Figure 6), the amount of force required to raise the object attached to the movable pulley is cut in half.
How long do pulleys last?
An idler pulley is expected to wear over time, and eventually, the pulley will fail. Replacement intervals for idler pulleys vary but are usually within the 50,000 to 100,000-mile range. Replacement often coincides with expected serpentine/accessory belt replacement periods.
