The Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) This is a professional teaching qualification aimed at graduates interested in teaching as a career. The PGCE provides professional preparation for teaching Senior Phase (SP) grades 7-9 and Further Education and Training (FET, grades 10-12) phases of schooling.
Admission requirements
• A candidate must satisfy the Senate that s/he holds an approved university degree.
• Approved undergraduate Bachelor’s degree (NQF Level 7 or 8).
• The degree or diploma with at least two school-related subjects (one at second-year level and one at third-year level), including English and one official language passed at first-year degree.
• Prospective students with N6 certificate qualify to be admitted to the B, Ed program with a specialization in the teaching subjects.
Is a master’s in education the same as a PGCE?
A Masters’s degree in education is a qualification you can obtain after achieving a postgraduate certificate in education (PGCE) or a postgraduate diploma in education (PGDE), with Qualified Teacher Status (QTS).
It is not a valid teaching qualification that registers you to teach in any country.
Is PGCE a higher certificate?
The PGCE (Senior Phase and Further Education and Training Teaching) is an entry-level, initial professional teaching program that ‘caps’ an undergraduate degree or an approved diploma.
Can I get a PGCE online?
Online PGCEs can be studied at most of the majority of universities and can be taken either as a full-time option or, in a smaller number of cases, as a flexible part-time course.
You can take a variety of different PGCE courses through Distance Learning on a flexible basis.
