Are plastic mason jars as good as glass?
Glass Jars vs Plastic Jars: The Verdict
Both materials certainly have their place in the packaging industry. Plastic jars are cheaper, they don’t shatter, and they are able to be recycled. However, if it’s a drinking material, liquid container, or a quick-use item, consumers do prefer glass.
Why are glass jars better than plastic jars?
Glass doesn’t leach chemicals
Plastic containers can leach chemicals not only into the environment but into their contents as well. This can happen especially when you transfer hot substances into a plastic container, or when you microwave food in plastic.
What are plastic jars made of?
Plastics are made from the polymerization of petroleum-based compounds with the addition of additives, fillers, and reinforcements.
Common plastics used for making containers are PET, HDPE, PVC, LDPE, PP, and PS. Some examples of miscellaneous plastics are PC, ABS, and PA.
Are plastic jars safe?
In general, the safest choices for food use are numbers 1, 2, 4 and 5. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends avoiding plastic containers with codes 3, 6 and 7.
Plastic number 3 contains vinyl or polyvinyl chloride (PVC), 6 has polystyrene and 7 can contain various plastics, such as Bisphenol A (BPA)
