The Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) This is a professional teaching qualification aimed at graduates interested in teaching as a career. The PGCE provides professional preparation for teaching Senior Phase (SP) grades 7-9 and Further Education and Training (FET, grades 10-12) phases of schooling.

Admission requirements

Your admission to Unisa is dependent on you meeting the specific admission requirements for your chosen qualification.

A Senior Certificate with exemption, as well as an appropriate accredited Bachelor’s degree (360 or 480 credits) or equivalent National Diploma (360 or 480 credits) with Food Services Management or Hospitality Management or Hospitality Studies completed up to third-year level and Accounting or Business Studies or Economics or Entrepreneurship or Tourism completed up to second-year level.
Students who do not meet all the requirements may be permitted to register one level or part thereof for the required school subject if not met for NDP. If more than one level or part thereof is outstanding, the student should rather consider applying for a Bachelor of Education degree.

Please note that this application fee is non-refundable even if you decide not to study through Unisa, do not qualify for admission to Unisa, or cannot be offered a space due to limited spaces available.

Apply for admission

Applications for admission to Unisa’s undergraduate qualifications (higher certificates, advanced certificates, diplomas, advanced diplomas & degrees) will be open from 11 August to 15 October 2022.

Admission to a qualification is not automatic. It will depend on whether you comply with the admission requirements and if space is available.

Additional support for this qualification via TVET colleges

Unisa has an agreement with various Technical Vocational Education and Training (TVET) colleges to offer classes in a selected number of qualifications. These classes have proved to generally improve the throughput rate of students who enroll for them.

Take note of the following:

Make sure that your TVET college of choice offers support in your qualification. 

Apply for admission during Unisa’s application period via your TVET college or via Unisa.

Can you teach while studying PGCE?

Obtaining this qualification, in addition to an undergraduate degree, allows PGCE students to become teachers. Note that the degree will need to have to be related to the school subject you would like to teach.

PGCE Primary: to teach children in primary school. You may only specialize in teaching a specific age group.
