Are life jackets compulsory in SA?
In circumstances of heightened risk, all occupants must wear a lifejacket level 50 or 50S or higher in semi-protected or protected waters and must wear a lifejacket level 100 or higher in unprotected waters.
How long can a life jacket last?

The maximum lifespan of a foam-filled lifejacket or buoyancy aid for leisure boating is ten years. This type of product is all but maintenance-free, however, an annual visual inspection is recommended.
How do you know if a life jacket is good?
Follow these tips:
- Check its buoyancy regularly by wading out to waist-deep water and bending your knees to see how well you float.
- Ensure that straps, buckles, and zippers are clean and in good working order.
- Tug on straps to ensure they are well attached with no sign of wear.
What is the best color for a life jacket?
It is best to choose a life jacket that uses plastic buckles instead of metal so that they won’t rust or corrode. Color is important for easy spotting in a rescue situation.
Bright colors such as red, orange, and yellow work best. To enhance visibility, some life jackets also include reflective tape.
What are the disadvantages of life jacket?
Disadvantages: High price; may be manual or automatic. There are many Type V (special use) inflatable jackets (covered later in this section) that provide Type II performance characteristics. Inflatable PFDs are not meant for children under the age of 16.
