Becoming a volunteer medic has it’s own kettle of fish associated with it but it’s probably more of a rewarding experience because while everyone else does the job to get paid, you do it for the love of it.
1 St John Volunteers
St John Volunteers, jointly referred to as the Brigade, are South Africans of all ages, from all walks of life, trained in first aid, who offer their emergency care skills at a variety of public events where first aid may be needed. Organisers of sporting and social events regularly call on the St John Brigade to perform first aid duties at their functions. Members regularly provide first aid cover for events such as the Comrades Marathon, Cape Town Cycle Tour, Ironman, Durban July, soccer and motorsport.
The St John Brigade is on call to the South African Military Health Service (SAMHS) in order to assist in times of national emergency. Members also assist at local old age homes, children’s homes, local hospitals and clinics, as well as the community at large.
2 Joburg Emergency Services
The Joburg Emergency Services is looking for volunteers. Volunteers are required to work at least 12 hours a month, and candidates with some form of related qualification are preferred. Volunteers perform amongst other things the following duties:
- Fire fighting and rescue
- Ambulance duties
- Control room duties
- Life and medical insurance is provided while the volunteer is on duty. Volunteers are particularly needed in Randburg, Roosevelt Park, Turffontein, Kibler Park, and Rosebank.

3 Maponya Ambulance
We also take in volunteers each year. If you’d like to work with us as a volunteer, submit your CV and if you are shortlisted for a position, we’ll contact you for further interviews.
What you need
All candidates should have a valid South African driver’s licence and any required certificates and qualifications, and should be registered with the Health Professional Council of South Africa.
