How To Avoid Placenta Previa

Placenta previa is a condition in pregnancy where the placenta covers part or all of the cervix, which can cause complications like bleeding. While you can’t always prevent it (since it often relates to factors beyond your control), you can take steps to lower your risk and promote a healthy pregnancy.

✅ How to Reduce the Risk of Placenta Previa

1. Avoid Smoking

  • Smoking is a known risk factor. Quitting before or during pregnancy significantly reduces the risk.

2. Limit the Number of Cesarean Sections

  • Multiple C-sections increase your chances of placenta previa in future pregnancies.
  • Talk to your doctor about options for vaginal birth after cesarean (VBAC) if safe for you.

3. Avoid Unnecessary Uterine Surgeries

  • Procedures like D&Cs, fibroid removal, or uterine scarring increase risk.
  • Only undergo such procedures when medically necessary.

4. Manage Risk Factors

  • Age over 35, multiple pregnancies, and carrying twins increase your risk.
  • While some of these aren’t controllable, early prenatal care helps manage them.

5. Attend All Prenatal Appointments

  • Regular ultrasounds can detect placenta previa early, allowing for careful monitoring and planning.
  • The placenta often moves upward as pregnancy progresses, especially if diagnosed early.

6. Avoid Illicit Drugs (e.g., Cocaine)

  • These substances are strongly associated with placental complications, including previa and abruption.

🚫 You Cannot Prevent:

  • How the placenta attaches to the uterus is largely random.
  • Some women develop placenta previa even with no risk factors.

⚠️ If You’ve Had Placenta Previa Before:

  • You are at higher risk in future pregnancies. Let your doctor know right away if you’re pregnant again.
