How To Avoid Oathbreaker Bg3
In Baldur’s Gate 3 (BG3), you become an Oathbreaker Paladin if you break your Paladin subclass oath, triggering a visit from the Oathbreaker Knight. If you want to avoid becoming an Oathbreaker and stick to your chosen oath (like Oath of Devotion, Ancients, or Vengeance), here’s how to avoid oathbreaking:
🔒 GENERAL RULE: Stick to the Spirit of Your Oath
Each subclass has specific roleplay-aligned behaviors. Breaking them triggers the Oathbreaker path.
💠 Oath of Devotion (Truth, Honor, Justice)
DO NOT:
- Lie, steal, or deceive.
- Murder innocent people or betray allies.
- Help obviously evil characters (e.g., side with goblins in Act 1).
DO:
- Be honest and noble.
- Help the helpless.
- Choose merciful or righteous dialogue options.
🌿 Oath of the Ancients (Preserve Nature, Light, Beauty)
DO NOT:
- Kill animals or peaceful natural creatures.
- Side with those who corrupt nature.
- Destroy druidic or natural sanctuaries.
DO:
- Defend nature and natural balance.
- Show compassion to creatures of nature (even beasts and monsters if they’re peaceful).
- Choose harmonious and protective actions.
⚔️ Oath of Vengeance (Punish Evil Swiftly)
DO NOT:
- Let obviously evil or guilty enemies go free.
- Forgive those who commit cruel or violent acts.
- Allow harm to innocent people when you could have stopped it.
DO:
- Deliver justice decisively.
- Punish those who wrong others.
- Be firm and unrelenting in the face of evil.
🧠 TIPS TO AVOID OATHBREAKING
✅ 1. Read Dialogue Choices Carefully
- Some “nice-sounding” options can still break your oath.
- If it involves lying, betrayal, or forgiveness in the face of evil—think twice.
✅ 2. Save Often
- Quick save before key NPC encounters or decisions. If you accidentally break your oath, reload.
✅ 3. Know the Triggers
- Example: Killing Tiefling refugees, siding with goblins, or attacking innocent NPCs may break oaths.
✅ 4. Stay in Character
- Play your Paladin like a moral compass that fits their subclass. If it feels like it violates your oath, it probably does.
❓ Already Broke Your Oath?
You can restore your Oath by:
- Visiting the Oathbreaker Knight at your camp.
- Paying a 1000 gold fee.
- Choosing to recommit to your original oath in dialogue.
