Tenth grade (also 10th Grade or Grade 10) Is the tenth year of formal or compulsory education. It is typically the second year of high school.
The subjects you choose in grade 9 can have a big impact on your future training and career prospects. It’s important to choose subjects that will allow you as much flexibility as possible. It will tell you which subjects (and marks) are required for admission into the different qualifications they offer.
NOTE: Science, Technology, Engineering, and medicine (STEM) generally require Pure Mathematics and Physical Science. Some Medical qualifications also require Life Science.
How Many Subjects In Grade 10 In South Africa?
National Senior Certificate (NSC)The certificate requires that learners should study seven subjects from Grade 10 – 12: four compulsory and three optional subjects.

Grade 10 is a very important year. It is the year students begin to meet their graduation requirements. In grade 10, the courses needed for graduation are:
- English Language Arts: Composition 10, New Media – and Creative Writing
- Social Studies 10
- Mathematics 10 (either Foundations and PreCalculus 10 or Workplace Math 10 – talk to your advisor about which one is right for you)
- Science 10
- Physical and Health Education 10
- Career Life Education
- a Fine Arts and/or an Applied Skills 10, 11, or 12, AND
- one elective from grades 10 – 12. A student is also required to take 7 electives for graduation (3 of which must be a grade 12 level course)
