What is Absconding?
When an employee is not reporting at work for consecutive days and has not informed his managers or peers about his whereabouts or the reason for his absence, this situation is called absconding in human resources.
How Long Is Absconding In South Africa?
3 days
It is therefore common practice that un-communicated absence for a period of more than 3 days will be dealt with as absconding in most disciplinary codes.
What is the absconding process in South Africa?
The employee will be charged with abscondment or unauthorized absence from work for the period that the employee had absconded.
The notice of the disciplinary hearing must state the consequences of not attending the hearing, and that the disciplinary hearing will proceed in the absence of the employee.
How do you clear an absconding case?
To remove an absconding case, the employee must first resolve any outstanding issues with their previous employer and obtain a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from them.
This NOC can then be presented to the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratization (MOHRE), which will review the case and make a decision.
