It actually depends on the size of your grow space. As a rule of thumb, you will need 30 to 40 watts per square foot. That is, if you have only one plant, you will need only 30 to 40 watts of power. 60 to 80 watts if there are two, 120 to 140 watts if 4, and so on.
How many hours a day should you use a grow light?
To be effective, grow lights really need to be on for at least 8-10 hours a day. This can vary up to 16 hours, depending on the conditions. That’s why LED grow lights are so popular – when they have to be left on all day, it’s best to use an energy efficient type! Always position a grow light above the plant.
What color grow light is best?
Light spectrum
- Blue light helps plants produce chlorophyll, the pigment they need to grow. It also helps encourage germination and root development in young plants and seedlings.
- Red light regulates plant growth and helps plants produce flowers and fruit.
- Green light helps maximize photosynthesis.
How do I choose a grow light?
Good full-spectrum lights for indoor gardening have a CRI rating above 85, but the closer to 100, the better. Be sure to buy enough fixtures to evenly distribute the light over the entire area. For seedlings along the perimeter to thrive, they should receive the same amount of light as those in the center.
