Are dummies good or bad?
Dummy use may impact on the formation of the mouth, particularly the teeth, and this could affect biting and chewing food. Dummy use increases a child’s risk of middle ear infections, tummy infections, chest infections and thrush in the mouth.
How long can a dummy last?
The recommendation from reputable dummy manufacturers like MAM is to change your child’s soother every 1 to 2 months.
However, our survey showed that only 35% of parents always do it this often. We found 14% change a dummy at least once every 4 weeks, and 21% every 5-8 weeks.
What are the benefits of dummies?
Using dummies can calm babies and help them to fall asleep. Dummies can also be used to sooth babies at other times, for example, to help reduce pain during hospital procedures (Adair, 2003; Horne et al, 2014).
Do dummies affect teeth?
Long-term dummy use may lead to: incorrect positioning of teeth – upper teeth may be pushed further forward than is ideal, or the top and bottom front teeth may not touch.
This can change the way the teeth meet when the child bites and can also affect speech development, especially s and z sounds.
