How strong is a crankshaft?
Forged crankshafts are produced in many different strength ranges depending on the material.
Factory-forged cranks are made from steels such as 1010, 1045, and 1053, which have a tensile strength of 100,000-110,000 psi.
What to look for when buying a crankshaft?
Large cracks in the fillet radii or oil holes are easy to spot, though, and are surefire signs of a crank to avoid. Color is a good indicator of a crank’s condition.
If the journals are dark blue or black, then extreme heat from lack of oil has been an issue. Pass on anything that isn’t nice and shiny.
How long should a crankshaft last?
A crankshaft pulley is designed to last the lifetime of the engine. However due to wear and tear, high temperatures, and exposure to coolant or engine oil (due to leaks),
the rubber ring can become damaged. The rubber ring works as a vibration dampener which holds together the internal part to the outer part of the pulley.
