It has 6,760 staff members, 3,400 beds, and occupies 70 ha (170 acres). The hospital is located in the Soweto area south of Johannesburg.

When was Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital built?

On 23 September 1942, Field Marshall Smuts officially opened the hospital.

He used the opportunity to indicate the post-war plan, which was that the Government would use the hospital for the Black population of the Witwatersrand.
