Bachelor of Music (BMus) at University of Stellenbosch

The BMus program provides learners with specialized skills in Music Education, Performing Arts, Interdisciplinary Studies, or Music Technology. Students are equipped with creative and critical musical abilities that are culturally and aesthetically sensitive to the demands of music in a multi-cultural society.

General admission requirements

• Write the National Benchmark Tests (NBTs) AQL
• An NSC aggregate of at least 65% (excluding Life Orientation)

Home Language 50%
• First Additional Language 40%
• In the main instrument (or in singing) at least a practical standard in classical music equivalent to the Grade VII examination and theoretical knowledge equivalent to any of the examining bodies’ Grade V theory examination
• Candidates must be available for an audition and theoretical test at the Department of Music in Stellenbosch, where candidates must demonstrate proof of the required standards.

Admission requirements

For admission to the University you need:
• A National Senior Certificate or school-leaving certificate from the Independent Examination Board as certified by Umalusi with admission to bachelor’s degree studies; or
• A university exemption certificate issued by the South African Matriculation Board to students with other school qualifications.
Admission to bachelor’s degree studies requires that you obtain a mark of at least 4 (50-59%) in each of four designated university admission subjects.
