Bachelor Of Education In Foundation Phase Teaching At University Of Mpumalanga UM

The UMP Bachelor of Education in Foundation Phase Teaching is aligned with the new Higher Education Qualifications Framework’s (HEQF) guidelines. The degree will equip Foundation Phase classroom teachers with the knowledge, skills and applied competencies for employability and further specialised study, in support of the principles of life-long learning.

Prospective students for this programmed need to have a genuine love and passion for working with, and understanding the development of the young child. They should be interested in becoming part of a noble profession which has as its main focus the education of children in the Foundation Phase. Students need to be flexible, willing to learn and to face up to the challenges presented by the South African context.

DURATION:
The Bachelor of Education in Foundation Phase Teaching programme is a four-year, 480 credit, exit level 7 qualification

CURRICULUM:
The Bachelor of Education in Foundation Phase Teaching aims to provide graduates with skills for the teaching profession, and related careers in education. The programmed focus exclusively on training students in Foundation Phase Teaching and provides a fundamental and comprehensive education underpinned by subject knowledge in the teaching of Language, Mathematics and Life Skills in Grades 1 to 3 as well as enabling Foundation Phase teachers to prepare Grade R learners for formal learning.

There is a focus on educational theory and methodology aligned with the requirements for a professionally qualified beginner teacher.

Areas of study covered by the programmed are: English for Foundation Phase; siSwati or isiNdebele for Foundation Phase (electives); Mathematics for Foundation Phase; Life Skills for Foundation phase; Teaching and Computer Technology; Education Studies; and practicum training within
the profession. In the first three years, students spend time in the adjacent teaching school where they begin to develop their teaching practice.

In the final year students are placed at a school for work-place based learning where they begin to apply the theory, knowledge and skills developed in the first three years, in a real world setting.

The minimum requirements for admission to a Bachelor’s Degree must be met. In addition, students will have the following:
Minimum Admission Point Score (APS):

  • 28 With Mathematics
  • 29 With Mathematical Literacy
    • English (Home or First Additional Language): Level 4
    • Second Recognized Language: Level 4
    • Mathematics: Level 3
    • Mathematical Literacy: Level 4
    • Second Recognized Language: Level 4

RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING (RPL) AND CREDIT ACCUMULATION AND TRANSFER (CAT)
Applicants wishing to be considered for admission in terms of RPL or to have credits transferred to this programmed must indicate this on their application. The University policy on Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL), Credit Accumulation and Transfer (CAT) will be applied.

PROGRESSION:
Students who successfully complete this Bachelor’s Degree will be able to apply for admission to Bachelor of Education (Honours) in Foundation Phase Teaching at UMP or another Higher Education Institution.
