Bachelor Of Development Studies At University Of Mpumalanga UM

The Bachelor of Development Studies is a three-year degree which equips students with skills and understanding of different theories, practices and
activities which are useful to facilitate holistic and integrated focused development.

Some of the common skills include development facilitation, communication, environmental planning, project design and management, rural and social development and research, amongst others.

The Bachelor of Development Studies degree integrates knowledge and systems from other disciplines such as; Economics, Sociology, Industrial Psychology, Public Administration and Computer Studies.

DURATION:
The Bachelor of Development Studies is a three-year, 360 credit, exit level 7 qualification.

CURRICULUM:
The Bachelor of Development Studies qualification
curriculum aims to provide students the following skills:


• Basic knowledge, skills and ability for the systematic management of modern socio-economic systems;
• An understanding of perspectives that form the context of development;
• Analytical critical thinking and problem solving skills in development;
• The ability to apply effectively and efficiently the acquired scientific knowledge, skills and abilities for the socio-economic benefit of the country’s development.

In the first year, students will be exposed to modules including the following; Development Studies, Micro and Macro Economics, Human Resource Management, Public Administration, and Sociology, with a support module of Computer Science.

In second and third year the focus is on Development Studies, Development Planning and Policy, Rural and Community Development and Environmental Management.

A second focus is on Economics and Entrepreneurship. Students will undertake research projects in second and third year.

Applicants with the National Senior Certificate (NSC):
The minimum requirements for admission to a Bachelor’s
Degree must be met. In addition, students will have the
following:


Minimum Admission Point Score (APS):

  • 31 With Mathematics
  • 32 With Mathematical Literacy
    • English (Home or First Additional Language) : Level 4
    • Mathematics: Level 2
    • Mathematical Literacy : Level 3

RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING (RPL) AND
CREDIT ACCUMULATION AND TRANSFER (CAT):


Applicants wishing to be considered for admission in terms of RPL or to have credits transferred to this programme must indicate this on their application. The University policy on Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL), Credit Accumulation and Transfer (CAT) will be applied.


PROGRESSION:
Students who successfully complete this Bachelor’s Degree will be able to apply for admission to the Bachelor of Development Studies (Honors) at UMP or another Higher Education Institution.
