Bachelor Of Commerce BCOM Degree At University Of Mpumalanga UM

The Bachelor of Commerce is a three-year degree which equips students with skills, knowledge and experience needed to pursue a career within the business, government and non-profit sectors.

The degree focuses on the factors that drive economic behavior at both individual and organizational level and equip students with the analytical, communication and problem-solving skills to effectively identify issues, source information and find efficient and practical solutions.

The course is structured to reflect the changing world of commerce and to provide a firm foundation for the world of work, including the necessary skills. Ethical principles and general knowledge needed to decision-making in a business environment.

DURATION:
The BCom (General) is a three-year, 360 credit, exit level 7 qualification.

CURRICULUM:
The curriculum provides for specialization up to third year level in two of the following fields: Accounting, Economics, Business Management, Entrepreneurship, and Industrial Psychology/Human Resource Management.

In first year, all students will take Economics I, Business Calculations, Academic Literacy and Business Computing. Students will then select two subjects from Industrial Psychology/Human Resource Management I, Accounting I and Business Management I.

In second year, students will continue with three of the major subjects taken in first year (Economics, Accounting, Business Management or Industrial Psychology/HRM) or may add a full year of Entrepreneurship or a semester of Commercial Law.

In third year, students continue with two of the major subjects taken in second year. It is therefore possible to major in Industrial Psychology or HRM, with a commerce subject such as Economics or Business Management, or to do a general Bachelor of Commerce with Economics and Accounting, or Economics and Business Management, or Business Management and Entrepreneurship in third year.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS:
Applicants with the National Senior Certificate (NSC): The minimum requirements for admission to a Bachelor’s Degree must be met. In addition, students will have the following:
Minimum Admission Point Score (APS):

  • 32 With Mathematics
    • English Language (Home or
    First Additional Language): Level 4
    • Mathematics: Level 4
    • Mathematical Literacy is not acceptable
    • Commerce subjects will be beneficial but are not required

RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING (RPL) AND
CREDIT ACCUMULATION AND TRANSFER (CAT):
Applicants wishing to be considered for admission in terms of RPL or to have credits transferred to this programmed must indicate this on their
application.

The University policy on Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL), Credit Accumulation and Transfer (CAT) will be applied.

PROGRESSION:
Students who successfully complete this BCom (General) will be able to apply for admission to a BCom (Honors) at UMP or another Higher Education Institution.
