BA in Music at University of Stellenbosch

The BA (Music) degree will equip students with a comprehensive music background which includes subjects such as Practical Music Study, Musicology, Theory of Music, Teaching Method and an elective subject from the humanities in line with the candidate’s interests (choosing from English Studies, Xhosa, Afrikaans-Nederlands, French, German, Psychology, and Mathematics).

• Write the National Benchmark Tests (NBTs) AQL
• An NSC aggregate of at least 65% (excluding Life Orientation)

• In the main instrument (or in singing) at least a practical standard in classical music equivalent to the Grade VII examination and theoretical knowledge equivalent to any of the examining bodies’ Grade V theory examination
• Candidates must be available for an audition and theoretical test at the Department of Music in Stellenbosch, where they must demonstrate proof of the required standards. On receiving your application, we send you information about the audition. Further information at auditions@sun.ac.za
If you take Mathematics as a university subject, then also:
• Mathematics 70%

Admission requirements

For admission to the University you need:
• A National Senior Certificate or school-leaving certificate from the Independent Examination Board as certified by Umalusi with admission to bachelor’s degree studies; or
• A university exemption certificate issued by the South African Matriculation Board to students with other school qualifications.
Admission to bachelor’s degree studies requires that you obtain a mark of at least 4 (50-59%) in each of four designated university admission subjects.
