Why is it called a dustbin?

If this dust was simply emptied onto the street, the roads would have quickly become submerged beneath grey powder and filth.

The answer was for each household to keep a bin in which to store the ash (a dust bin), which was collected by a designated dust contractor.

How are dustbins made?

The main parts are the body of the bin and the lid, which are formed by injection molding. This is where molten material is injected into a mold, then it’s left to cool and harden.

The lid is fastened onto the body hinge, and a metal axle with 2 rubber wheels is mounted on the bottom of the bin

Who made the dustbin?

The word dustbin – poubelle – comes from the man who invented them in France, Eugène Poubelle.

He was the Préfet of the Seine from 1883 to 1896 and was responsible for much of the day-to-day running of Paris.
