What is a Body Warmer?
A gilet or body warmer is a sleeveless jacket resembling a waistcoat or blouse. It may be waist- to knee-length and is typically straight-sided rather than fitted; however, historically, gilets were fitted and embroidered. In 19th-century dressmaking a gilet was a dress bodice shaped like a man’s waistcoat.

What is the difference between a gilet and bodywarmer?
A common thought is that there is a difference between a gilet and a bodywarmer when, in reality, they are the same piece of clothing but the names are interchangeable.
You may find that gilets are used for insulated and down pieces while bodywarmer refers to fleece and softshell versions.
What are body warmers good for?
A gilet, pronounced ‘ji-lay’, is a sleeveless jacket usually worn over an outfit to provide an additional layer of warmth. Also known as a body warmer, they are ideal for maintaining a comfortable body temperature. A gilet works well as a layer above a lighter top.
A body warmer is designed to retain heat with an extra thick layer without it feeling bulky or swamped. Also referred to as gilets, they allow full flexibility of the arms due to their sleeveless style and are therefore a practical option for beating the cold whilst on site.
How tight should a body warmer be?
The arm holes should be high, and the garment should fit snugly around the body to ensure it can sit nicely underneath a winter jacket. For ladies’ gilets, the same is true. Ensure the fit is comfortable and snug but with enough room to layer correctly.
How do you wear a body warmer?
The gilet over a shirt, cardigan or knit is one of the easiest ways to wear it. The rules are simple: keep the bottom layer in a neutral tone (black, grey, navy, maroon or green) and then place the gilet over the top for extra insulation.
