Is agave available in South Africa?
The agave plant grows abundantly in many regions across South Africa.
The Agave ‘hearts” or “Pinas” are slowly oven-baked in our wood-fired oven and more recently also cooked in our small custom made ‘autoclave’. The cooked Pinas are then reduced to syrup, by hand all done at our micro-distillery in Cape Town.
How much does an agave plant cost?
The price ranges from R226.03to R3767.15 depending on the variety and size.
Can you grow agave in South Africa?
Agaves have been growing in the Karoo for a century and a half. Legend has it that the plants were brought to Africa by Spanish and Portuguese sailors, who used the heavy hearts of the three-meter (10-foot) high plant as ballast in their ships. Until the late 1990s, the agaves were used as feedstock for animals.
