PGCE (Further Education and Training Teaching) (Grade 7-12) At University of Johannesburg‎ (UJ)

Post Graduate Certificate in Education-PGCE If you have  any bachelor’s degree with school subjects or an approved National Diploma including school subjects and wish to become a teacher, this one-year full-time or two-year part-time programme will qualify you to do so.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

PGCE (FET Teaching) To be able gain access to the PGCE (FET Teaching) an applicant must have:

• A first degree on level 7 with a minimum of 360 credits with two school related subjects, one on
second year level and one on third year level.
Assessment of prior learning could also lead to entry or an advanced credit standing.
Note: PGCE (FET Teaching) consists of three year modules and is presented on the Auckland Park Kingsway (APK) campus:

• Education and Teaching Studies(presented in year 1 for part time students)

• Specialisation in two Teaching Methodology and Practicum modules in FET Teaching (presented in year 2 for part time students)

PGCE: (SP & FET Teaching)
To be able gain access to the PGCE (Senior Phase and FET Teaching) an applicant must have one of the following:

• A first degree on level 7 with a minimum of 360 credits with two school related subjects, one on second year level and one on third year level.

• An approved National Diploma on level 6 with a minimum of 360 credits from an accredited institution with two school related subjects, one on
second year level and one on third year level.

Students should have sufficient study of the disciplines underpinning the specific teaching specialisations (subjects) to teach that particular
school subject in a specific phase.

Note: PGCE (Senior Phase & FET Teaching) consists of three year modules and is presented on the Auckland Park Kingsway (APK) campus:

• Education and Teaching Studies (presented in year 1 for part time students)

• Teaching Methodology and Practicum A in Senior Phase (presented in year 2 for part time students)

• Teaching Methodology and Practicum
B in FET Phase Teaching (presented in year 2 for part time students)
The latter two modules focus on student’s Pedagogical Content Knowledge

FULL-TIME VS. PART-TIME REGISTRATION

• Students may register to complete the qualification either full-time (1 year) or part-time (2 years).
• Students who are employed on a fulltime basis must complete the PGCE part-time over 2 years. However, full time teachers may complete the programme full-time over 1 year.

• If a student starts full-time work (excluding teaching) during the year the university must be duly informed in writing in order to change the
registration of the student to parttime.
