How To Avoid Pterygium

To avoid pterygium—a benign growth of the conjunctiva that can extend onto the cornea—follow these preventive measures, especially if you live in a sunny, windy, or dusty environment:

1. Protect Your Eyes from UV Light

  • Wear sunglasses that block 100% UVA and UVB rays.
  • Choose wraparound styles to limit sunlight from entering the sides.
  • Use a wide-brimmed hat when outdoors to further reduce UV exposure.

2. Avoid Dust and Wind Exposure

  • Wear protective eyewear (like goggles or glasses) in windy, dusty, or dry conditions.
  • Limit outdoor activities during sandstorms or strong winds.

3. Use Artificial Tears (Lubricating Eye Drops)

  • Helps prevent dry eye, which is a risk factor.
  • Use preservative-free drops regularly, especially if you’re in dry or air-conditioned environments.

4. Quit Smoking

  • Tobacco smoke is an irritant that may increase the risk of developing pterygium.

5. Take Frequent Breaks from Screens

  • While not a direct cause, eye strain and dryness from screen use can aggravate underlying conditions.
  • Follow the 20-20-20 rule: every 20 minutes, look at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds.

6. Monitor and Treat Eye Irritations Promptly

  • Seek medical advice if you experience redness, irritation, or a visible growth on the eye.
  • Early intervention can reduce progression.
