How To Avoid Motion Sickness

Motion sickness can make travel unpleasant, but the good news is that there are several effective ways to prevent or reduce it before and during motion (car, boat, plane, etc.).

✅ How to Avoid Motion Sickness

1. Choose the Right Seat

  • Sit where motion is least felt:
    • Car: Front passenger seat
    • Plane: Over the wings
    • Boat: Midship, on the lower deck
    • Bus: Near the front and by a window

2. Focus on the Horizon

  • Look at a fixed point in the distance (like the horizon) to help your body reconcile what your eyes and inner ear are sensing.

3. Avoid Reading or Screens

  • Looking down at a book or phone can make symptoms worse. Try to keep your eyes up and ahead.

4. Fresh Air Helps

  • Open a window or use a fan to get fresh air. Poor ventilation can worsen nausea.

5. Eat Light Before Travel

  • Avoid heavy, greasy, or spicy foods before and during travel.
  • A light snack (like crackers or ginger biscuits) may help.

6. Stay Hydrated

  • Sip water often. Avoid alcohol and caffeine, which can dehydrate or irritate your stomach.

7. Use Motion Sickness Remedies

  • Over-the-counter meds:
    • Dramamine (dimenhydrinate)
    • Bonine (meclizine)
    • Scopolamine patches (behind the ear, prescription)
  • Natural remedies:
    • Ginger (tea, capsules, or chews)
    • Peppermint (tea or essential oil)
    • Acupressure wristbands (like Sea-Bands)

8. Close Your Eyes and Relax

  • Resting or napping during the trip may help your brain reduce sensory conflicts.
