What is a Pressure Relief Valve?
A relief valve or pressure relief valve is a type of safety valve used to control or limit the pressure in a system; excessive pressure might otherwise build up and create a process upset, instrument or equipment failure, explosion, or fire.

Who manufactures pressure relief valves in South Africa?
Axiom Hydraulics has nearly 30 years’ of experience in designing, manufacturing, repairing, and servicing pressure relief valves to suit the hydraulic needs of southern Africa’s mining, marine, and agriculture industries. Axiom Hydraulics also holds critical hydraulic spare parts to minimize downtime for clients.
How do you calculate the size of a pressure relief valve?
The Relief Pressure is generally determined by the equipment being protected and is calculated as Relief Pressure = Set Pressure + overpressure. By default, ProMax uses the stream pressure as the Set Pressure, and a 10% Over Pressure, but these can be modified for your analysis.
What is the maximum pressure of relief valve?
It is recommended to have a relief valve pressure setting at least 25% higher than the maximum system operating pressure.
The PRV set pressure should not be higher than the design pressure (MWP) of the vessel. A conventional PRV is designed to open at a predetermined pressure – the set pressure.
