What is a Relief Valve?
A relief valve or pressure relief valve is a type of safety valve used to control or limit the pressure in a system;
excessive pressure might otherwise build up and create a process upset, instrument or equipment failure, explosion, or fire.

How do I choose a relief valve?
Connection size and type.
Set pressure (PSIG).
Temperature.
Back pressure.
Service.
Required capacity.
What pressure relief valve should I use?
The relief valve setting(s) should be at least 10% or 15-psig, whichever is greater, above the maximum operating pressure.
Where unstable process conditions exist, this differential should be at least 10% above the maximum operating pressure or 25-psig, whichever is greater.
What are the types of relief valves?
Pressure relief valves
Relief valves
Counterbalance valves
How long does the relief valve last?
As we mentioned earlier, pressure relief valves that are properly maintained can last for up to 30 years. In most cases, it’s important to look at the
“why” behind pressure relief valve failure, rather than just replacing the valve in question.
