What is a Foot Valve?
A check valve, non-return valve, reflux valve, retention valve, foot valve, or one-way valve is a valve that normally allows fluid to flow through it in only one direction.
Check valves are two-port valves, meaning they have two openings in the body, one for fluid to enter and the other for fluid to leave.

Does a foot valve have to be vertical?
Foot & Check Valves
For spring-type foot and check valves, you can install these either vertically or horizontally to allow for any size of space. Flapper-style foot and check valves are generally installed vertically but can be installed horizontally if necessary, as long as the flapper closes down.
Do foot valves go bad?
Pumping from a lake you can always get a fish bone, leaf, or blade of grass in the foot valve and even a new one would fail. But just like everything else in a pump system, the life of the foot valve depends on how many times the pump cycles on and off and how hard it slams on the pump stop.
Does a piston pump need a foot valve?
If the pump needs to be mounted above the supply tank, the use of a foot valve in the tank is recommended. In all installations, it is advisable to use a suction line that is as short as possible and sized large enough to accommodate sufficient flow to the pump suction.
