How do you measure firmness of foam?
It is measured using the force in pounds required to indent a foam sample by 25% of its original height. This measurement is called Indentation Force Deflection (IFD). Firmness is independent of foam density, although it is often thought that higher-density foams are firmer.
How do I know a quality foam?
The first thing to do is to judge the foam quality by its density (weight per cubic ft.). Normally, the heavier the foam is, the better the quality. Lightweight foam such as Commerical Grade Polyurethane foam at 1.2 lb. per cubic foot is a cheap quality foam.
