What is CSSD Technician?
The CSSD Technician is responsible for the cleaning, assembly, inspection, wrapping, and sterilization of surgical instruments and medical equipment in a manner compliant and timely manner that are congruent with the operations of the Hospital, particularly those pertaining to perioperative services.

Foundation Course in Decontamination and Sterilization
Safed offers a 5 module CSSD Foundation Course in a workshop format. The Foundation Course is a general introduction to the principles of sterilization and can be attended by anyone involved with Sterile Services. The purpose of this course is to provide all persons working directly or indirectly with sterile medical devices, a brief orientation into all aspects of CSSD.
The main objectives of this course are:
- To recognize that all practices in the CSSD are guided/governed by legislation, as well as an introduction to said legislation
- To recognize that there is a complete process that must be followed to ensure effective, safe reprocessing of medical devices
- To ensure a basic understanding of the complete process to ensure effective, safe reprocessing of medical devices

- Infection Prevention: Standards of Care: Legal Implications
- Understanding the CSSD process: Principles of Cleaning; Inspection
- Understanding the CSSD process: Principles of Wrapping; Sterilization Sterile Storage and Dispatch
- Quality control: Process Monitoring: Tracking and Traceability: Record Keeping
Advanced Course in Decontamination and Quality Management
Safed offers a 10-module Advanced Course in Decontamination and Quality Management which is run over two full days. The Advanced Course in Decontamination and Quality Management is an in-depth training aimed at managers in the decontamination area and can be attended by anyone involved in a management/supervisory level in Theatre, CSSD, Pharmacy, Infection Control, etc. who has attended and passed the Foundation Course. The purpose of this course is to update and inform managers, working directly or indirectly with sterile medical devices, about new research, advances in technology, legislation, and standards related to CSSD.
The main objectives of this course are:
- To recognize that all practices in the CSSD are guided/governed by legislation, as well as an introduction to said legislation
- To recognize that there is a complete process that must be followed to ensure effective, safe reprocessing of medical devices
- To ensure a basic understanding of the complete process to ensure effective, safe reprocessing of medical devices
- To ensure basic knowledge to identify and manage risks in a CSSD
How many years is a CSSD course?
What’s the structure of the course? The course has 12 modules that need to be fulfilled according to the timeline that will run for 10 weeks for the intensive course and 6 months for the Full course.
What is the qualification of CSSD?
Candidates above 17 and below 35 are eligible for CSSD technician. To qualify for this course, the student must have cleared secondary with an average of 50% in Physics, Chemistry, and Biology.
