How To Avoid Lice
Avoiding lice (especially head lice) involves good hygiene, smart precautions, and being mindful in environments where lice spread easily—like schools, camps, or shared living spaces.
✅ How to Avoid Lice
1. Avoid Head-to-Head Contact
- Lice spread most commonly through direct hair-to-hair contact.
- Teach kids (and remind adults) to avoid close contact when playing, hugging, or taking selfies.
2. Don’t Share Personal Items
Avoid sharing:
- Combs, brushes, hats, helmets
- Scarves, hair accessories, headphones
- Pillows or bedding in communal settings
3. Tie Up Long Hair
- Keeping hair tied back in a bun or braid makes it harder for lice to latch on.
4. Perform Regular Head Checks
- Especially in children, check the scalp and behind the ears weekly.
- Early detection prevents full infestations.
5. Use Lice-Repellent Products (Optional)
- Some shampoos and sprays contain tea tree oil, lavender, or eucalyptus, which may deter lice.
- Not guaranteed, but may help in high-risk settings like schools.
6. Wash and Isolate Exposed Items
- After visiting places with known outbreaks, wash clothes, bedding, and hats in hot water (130°F / 54°C).
- Items that can’t be washed can be sealed in a plastic bag for 2 weeks to kill lice.
7. Avoid Sharing Storage Spaces
- Use individual cubbies or hooks at school or camp to prevent hats and coats from touching.
Bonus: What If Someone in Your Home Has Lice?
- Treat the person immediately with OTC or prescribed lice treatments.
- Check and treat all close contacts.
- Clean and vacuum furniture, car seats, and bedding thoroughly.
